At this time of national mourning for the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, we wanted to record how the community of Rothwell Town, home to the Royal Charter Rowell Fair, marked the sad occasion.

On Saturday 10th September at 4pm, Town Mayor, Councillor Karl Sumpter laid a floral tribute at the War Memorial, where the Town’s Church bells sounded. This was followed by a Commemoration Service led by Reverend Andrew Farrington at Holy Trinity Church.

On Sunday 11th September, beginning at 2pm, as a proud ‘Proclamation’ Town, Rothwell Town Council arranged that the Proclamation of Accession was read. Attendees were invited to meet in the Market Square from 2pm, to then walk via Church Walk to Holy Trinity Church.

Bailiff to the Lord of the Manor (and our own Chair of the Rowell Fair Society) Frank York, read the Accession Proclamation in front of Holy Trinity Church at 2.30pm according to centuries-old-tradition, supported by the Bailiff’s Halbadiers.

On both days, the Rowell Fair Society was represented not only by Frank York, but also President, Paul Johnson and his wife and RFS Secretary Sue Johnson. The Lord of the Manor, Zandra Powell and her husband, Major Powell, were also in attendance.

The Rowell Fair Society would like to send their best wishes to King Charles III in the time-honoured way…

“God Save the King and the Lord of the Manor”
