At our final Members’ Evening for 2026, on Thursday, we were treated to Steve Dimmer’s illustrated talk about the BBC iconic series “Only Fools and Horses”.
The event took place in the recently refurbished Conservative Club Lounge where an enthusiastic group of fans had assembled.
Sue Johnson (Secretary – Rowell Fair Society) introduced tonight’s Members’ Evening – our final event for 2026 – that included the very popular Rowell Fair Raffle. Sue introduced Steve Dimmer and it wasn’t long before we were all re-living those days where ‘Plonker’, ‘Cushty’, ‘This time next year, we’ll be millionaires’ and many more of writer John Sullivan’s creative catchphrases became part of national consciousness! 😁😁
Steve, certainly knew his stuff and even the most enthusiastic of fans would have left the Talk learning something new about this iconic series. With his extensive knowledge of the programme together with his numerous video clips from the series we were all instantly transported back to a time when TV comedy was ‘laugh out loud’ funny.

- The series ran until 1996
- The Christmas Special in 1996 was seen by a mighty 24.3 million viewers
- Series 6 onwards was extended to 50 minutes per episode
- By the time it ended, a total of 64 episodes and 19 Festive Specials had been broadcast
Steve’s very entertaining session lasted about an hour and as the clock approached 9pm, we all felt that it was over far too soon! Steve took questions from the audience before receiving his well-deserved applause.
No Members’ Evening would be complete without our legendary Raffle organised by our very own Bailiff to the Lord of the Manor – Frank York. Tonight’s event didn’t disappoint, with its prize pot that included a mix of chocolate and wine – and for balance, a tub of sweets (ideal for Halloween night!)
All good things must come to an end and Sue Johnson brought the evening to a close, thanking Steve for his entertaining and informative presentation.
Our next Members’ Evening will be in February, 2027 – our AGM (date to be announced).
What a great night we had and not surprisingly, we all had a big smile on our faces as the evening came to a close.
